HOUSE ROBBER SHOT BY RESIDENT AND ARRESTED BY POLICE

A resident of Cliff Avenue in Waterkloof Ridge defended himself by shooting several shots in the direction of a suspect when he encountered the suspect inside his house. The suspect was found and arrested a few hours later by the Brooklyn police at an open field.

On Thursday morning, 3 September 2009 at about 03:00 a resident who are in his late forties, came across an unknown man inside his house who pointed him with a firearm.  The resident, who happened to have his firearm at his side, fired several shots in the direction of the suspect.

The suspect then fled the scene.  The resident later discovered that a firearm and cell phones were stolen.  Furthermore he found electrical appliances outside the house that the suspects left behind when they fled.  The resident contacted the police and he informed them of the incident and that one of the suspects could be injured.

The police utilized maximum resources including the police helicopter and the dog unit in an effort to trace the suspects.  At about 10:00 the wounded 36 year old suspect from Mozambique was traced and arrested on the spot.  He is under police guard in hospital and will appear in court on a later stage on a charge of house robbery.

The second suspect is still at large and the police hope to make another arrest soon.

BROOKLYN YOUTH PLAN A FUN DAY WITH POLICE

The Brooklyn Youth Desk members are planning a family fun day on the Saturday 5th of September 2009 at Bruinslich Park (on the corner of Crown and Julius Jeppe) from 10:00 till 15:00.

The main aim of the day is to inform and to involve residents with sector and community policing. The Youth also believe that it is important to give back to the community and to demonstrate the youth’s support towards a crime free society.

The fun day will start with a procession leaving from the Brooklyn Police Station at 09:00 comprising the Brooklyn SAPS, Tshwane Metro Police, Christian Motorcyclist Association, Fire brigade and the purple party bus.  The procession will drive through Sector 2 (Alphen Park, Ashlea Gardens, Bailey’s Muckleneuk, Brooklyn South, Maroelana, Menlo Park, Nieuw Muckleneuk and Waterkloof) of the Brooklyn police station to Bruinslich Park.

Various forms of entertainment and food and drink stalls for the whole family will be provided on the day.  The programme of the day has something for everyone.  The Brooklyn police will show some techniques

on self defense, there will be a “jaws of life” demonstration, an act by “The Performer” theatre, a kid’s fashion show and many more.   Children can enjoy themselves on jumping castles and take part in other activities while their parents visit various security initiatives displays.

The Youth responsible for organizing the day are Honours degree students in Criminology at the University of Pretoria.  They form part of the Brooklyn police’s Youth Desk.  The Youth Desk is a platform for the youth where they can take hands with the police and as a result initiate their own crime prevention awareness campaigns.

It is the second year that the youth members involved themselves with the marketing of sector policing in the Brooklyn precinct.  Sector policing is an approach to policing whereby the service area of a police station is

divided into smaller, manageable areas known as sectors.  For each sector, the SAPS appoint a police official who is known as the sector commander.  The community and its sector commander are active partners in ensuring local safety and security.

The Youth are inviting all business men, residents and other youth to support the day. Contact Angie van der Spuy at 083 271 3348 or angievdspuy@gmail.com for more information.  To get more information on sector policing email sector2@brooklynCPF.co.za .

Please bring the whole family to support the youth on Saturday.  If you have a safety initiative or security company that you want to market on the day, you can phone Angie.  Also if you want to put up a flea market stall, you are also welcome to phone Angie.
