Brooklyn news, SAPS / CPF Feedback
Crime Prevention operations:
Members who are on rest days are called up for special crime prevention operations over the weekend to address crime. Henri Boshof asked the meeting whether anybody has specific needs for a crime prevention operation in their sector. Nobody had something at that stage. Sup The-Kisho avail him if a need arise for any operation.

It was once again stressed that 10111 is the number to phone to ensure quick response. It is also the best to phone them when a suspicious vehicle was spotted. Radio control will not give feedback to the community member who made the call, on whether a vehicle tested positive or not. When all the command and control centres are up and running, communication of this kind of information will improve. It will bring the police closer to the community.

Brooklyn news General
Sector 1:
The Sector meeting took place and the road show in Hatfield was very successful.
The residents are experiencing a problem with the people who are sleeping on the pavement at Normandie Court flats (C/o Lynnwood and Duncan Road). They were not removed by the end of July as promised by the Tshwane Metro Police.

Sector 2:
13th Avenue was identified as a crime hotspot in this sector. A project concept was distributed at the meeting. The ward councillor is already involved. Tshwane Metro Police’s assistance is also needed in this regard. People who walk through the park get robbed and mugged. The bird park also does not have sufficient lighting. A suggestion was made to apply for park rangers at the Park Boards.
There is still a need for an employment centre for vagrants. Areas that were identified for this need are Rosslyn, Skilpad and 13th street. It is very important to educate the community at every opportunity not to employ people from the street.

Sector 3
Erasmuskloof is being targeted by criminals. The suggestion was made that the road show must be planned for Erasmuskloof.

Sector 4
Seventy to Eighty people attended the Sector crime Forum meeting.
The quarry is still a concern and the residents threatened to take matters into their own hands. The CPF chair person will request the Provincial office to plan weekly clean-up operations for the quarry.
The City council has a project: “Adopt-a Spot”, to measure and control open areas.
The Tshwane Metro Police was thanked for the quick response after a complaint was phoned in about illegal traders.

There is not enough volunteers to man the operational centre. Currently hand radios are given to all the security vehicles that are working in the sector. Some of the civilians are also doing community patrols. The purpose of the community patrols is to be the eyes and the ears of the police. It is important to have a link with the police. There is a hand radio available for a police vehicle to improve the communication. The Sector Manager will coordinate the hand radios on the police vehicles. The community patrol vehicle will not respond on incidents. The information will only be forwarded to the police and the security vehicles. It was emphasize that Sector 2 and 3 must sell the Community patrol concept to their residents.

Brooklyn police in conjunction with the Gauteng Traffic Department addressed the abuse of alcohol in Hatfield over the weekend.
The operation was a success and a strong and clear message was send out to those who did not comply with the law.
On Saturday night and Sunday morning (30/31 August 2008) a total of 38 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 18 were arrested for drinking in the public and two for the possession of drugs. One of the suspects that were arrested for drunken driving is wanted on a Yeoville case. The misuse of alcohol frequently leads to other crimes. Persons who are under the influence of drugs and liquor are a soft target for opportunistic criminals. Armed robberies, muggings and even car jackings are often reported after somebody came from a pub or a night club. Many criminals are found to be under the influence while committing a crime. The abuse of alcohol is also playing a role in the disintegration of family relationships and is time and again identified as one of the contributing factors of domestic violence. Furthermore alcohol is involved with numerous fatal traffic accidents. The Brooklyn police will sustain these types of operations throughout the Brooklyn precinct on a weekly basis.
